Introduction

opsZero's business model is a photocopy of IBM’s Hybrid Cloud and AI strategy. Read Page 11 of the IBM Annual Report. While IBM became a Cloud company opsZero started as one. IBM bought RedHat and made the core of its business Kubernetes, while we have been developing Kubespot our own distribution of Kubernetes for a long time.

Like other great companies that started in the shadow of IBM: Apple, Microsoft, Oracle we will steal this strategy as our own with a focus on lower cost and addressing the needs of the SMB and mid-market.

IBM executing the same business model validates our own business. We can leverage the marketing data that we can reuse and don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Lastly, IBM is setting up the industry for what to expect in terms of Kubernetes through OpenShift.

Fast Follower Strategy

IBM Strategy

opsZero executes on a strategy called the fast follower. A fast follower doesn’t necessarily innovate first, but takes what exists and makes it better or targets an unneeded segment. We have a lot of advantages that IBM doesn’t have: we are small and nimble, we are not tied to a specific Kubernetes distribution , we don’t have a legacy business, and we can provide our services at a much, much lower cost than what IBM can provide.

We will do the following things in our fast follower strategy:

  1. Copy the existing terminology that IBM uses across the board and use those terms when we talk to partners and customers.
  2. Figure out what IBM is putting out there in terms of software, support, etc. and build and launch competing products. Also, see what the competitors are doing and setup offerings.
  3. Sell value add, full stack consulting. We cannot just do the infra level work we need to provide a broader range of value add services.

Some things we will be doing differently compared to IBM and that is because the companies we are working with tend to be more flexible compared to the ones IBM is targeting. For example, most developers today use GitHub Actions not Jenkins. But OpenShift is built around this technology that is becoming mostly enterprise focused. The difference between IBM and opsZero in this regards is to be developer focused. Our differentiators:

  • Developer focused.
  • Cost as a differentiator.
  • Cloud agnostic.

Modernization

We should focus our professional and managed services around migration to Kubernetes and Compliance Remediation:

  1. Startup Launch

    1. Build a Managed Kubernetes based Cloud Infrastructure using EKS, AKS, GKE and give it away especially on the Hyperscalers. Connect this to the Console so they can eventually migrate workloads off the hyperscaler version to the Talos Linux based deployment. The reason for this deployment is to get the AWS credits that are provided to partners.
  2. Modernization & AI

    1. Windows Server to Containerization
    2. AI and ETL Development
  3. Compliance Remediation

Support is going to be our differentiator and the reason AWS does so well. It is their support that is best and we need to follow suite in terms of how to simply and accelerate the speed at which we provide support.

Application Support

Industry Support

We will focus on three Industry verticals and develop the capabilities and compliances to address the needs of those three markets.

  • Tech: The tech industry is a prodigious use of compute and we need to expand our access into this market.
  • Healthcare: As the world population ages, healthcare will soon become the primary expense of most developed countries. We need to tap into this market and provide solutions that help new startups and technologies.
  • Government: As a corollary to population aging is that the government’s role will expand to provide even more social services which need to be delivered efficiently.

opsZero AI

Data & AI

Build vertical APIs that we provide as products but push companies toward the solutions. The products seek to address the self serve market while also allowing us to make use of compute.

Further we should partner with tech companies that can become customers as well as partners.

APIs

Integrations

Kubespot

Cross Cloud Workloads

The Workload Management Console provides the developer level experience to run workloads across cloud providers with a focus on Github. We will build the following capabilities:

  • Cheap Github Runners
  • Cross cloud deployment with the ability to migrate workloads from hyperscaler to private cloud and vice versa.

AI Workloads

Use the Sidero Distribution at the core of our Kubernetes offering to span Public Cloud, Private Cloud and Edge.

opsZero Cloud

  1. Managed DevOps
    1. Migrating bespoke deployments to Kubernetes and maintain these for customers with high touch.

Hyperscalers

The hyperscalers are here to stay and will be fighting tooth and nail to get customers into their Cloud with credits and other services. We do not need to compete with the hyperscalers and need to instead use the hyperscalers in a strategic manner. Further, most companies will build and start on the hyperscalers anyways so neglecting to build expertise within these Clouds will be detrimental to our success.

In that regard there needs to be a general expertise within the Hyperscalers as much as in the Private Cloud. Some of the tooling that the Public Cloud provides can also be used for the Professional Services. Further, being a distributor or reseller of the Public Cloud services can be an alternative revenue source.

  • Expand our AWS Partnership and also become an AWS reseller
  • Get our Azure and Google Cloud certifications.
Resale & Funding

We can also function as a reseller of existing SaaS to drive additional revenue. For example, opsZero’s AWS Partnership can generate up to 15% margin off retail prices if we manage customer billing but we do not currently do so. Additionally our relationship with Ingram Micro allows us to get major discounts on most common software.

Datacenters

  1. Managed Datacenters
    1. We sell our services to other datacenters. As we make the technology to run our own data center more efficient we need to bring this technology to other data centers as well. Like how on Amazon.com there is goods sold by Amazon and third parties we need to be able to sell our own data center tech and provide it at the lowest cost or use a third party if they can do it for even less.

The datacenters need to be optimized around a standardized technology stack on ARM to reduce energy use while increasing compute density. We should standardize the infrastructure and focus on heavy utilization. The VMs and such that a customer needs can be provided through Kubevirt running on top of Sidero Talos.

  • Hardware: Ampere / Qualcomm powered hardware infrastructure.
  • Energy: Since we are primarily focused on AI workloads energy costs will be a major factor that needs to be considered. Figuring out how to attain energy cheaply will need to be addressed as the enterprise grows.
  • Network Interconnect: A primary concern with hyperscaler to datacenter workload migration is egress bandwidth costs. Peering between datacenter to hyperscaler is needed to ensure that egress costs do not become a burden for the customer.

Edge & CDN

Healthcare devices such as MRI machines, etc. should be something we think about as we engage with customers that may need this capability to manage the edge networks as well.
